Choosing the right tube packaging is a big decision for skincare, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical brands. The choice between Aluminum Barrier Laminate (ABL), Plastic Barrier Laminate (PBL), and Seamless Plastic tubes determines how long your product stays fresh, how pretty it looks on the shelf, and how easy it is for customers to use.

1. What Are They Made Of?

The main difference between these three tubes is the hidden layer inside the tube wall.

Aluminum Barrier Laminate (ABL)

ABL tubes are made from a flat sheet wrapped like a sandwich. The outside and inside are plastic, but the middle core is a very thin layer of real aluminum foil.

Plastic Barrier Laminate (PBL)

PBL tubes look similar to ABL tubes, but they do not use any metal. Instead, they use a special, high-tech plastic barrier layer called EVOH or Nylon sandwiched in the middle.

Seamless Plastic Tubes

Unlike ABL and PBL tubes, which start as flat sheets and are rolled into cylinders, seamless tubes are made by melting plastic pellets and extruding them through a round die to form a continuous pipe. Because of this, they are completely smooth and have no seams or joints.

2. Product Protection: Keeping Ingredients Fresh

The air, moisture, and light around us can quickly ruin beauty creams and medical ointments.

ABL (Best Protection): The metal layer creates an absolute shield. Air, moisture, and sunlight cannot get inside. This keeps volatile essential oils, medical creams, and sensitive vitamins perfectly safe and fresh.
PBL (Good Protection): The EVOH plastic layer stops air from getting in very well. However, if the tube is left in a very hot and humid bathroom for a long time, tiny amounts of moisture might eventually sneak through.
Seamless (Basic to Good Protection): A basic single-layer seamless tube lets air pass through easily, which can cause creams to change color or lose their scent quickly. To fix this, high-quality seamless tubes are made with 5 layers of plastic, including a hidden EVOH shield to match PBL protection.

3. Decoration and Printing: Looking Pretty on the Shelf

How a tube is built changes how it can be printed and designed.

Flat Printing (ABL and PBL)

Because ABL and PBL tubes start as flat rolls of plastic film, they are printed before they are shaped into tubes. This lets printers use advanced, high-definition machinery.

Advantage : You get razor-sharp labels, clear text, smooth color blends, and gorgeous photorealistic photos. ABL tubes can also use clear ink over the metal layer to create shiny metallized effect.
Disadvantage : Because the flat sheet must be rolled into a tube and welded together, there will be a visible line (a seam) running down the back. This interrupts your artwork.

Round Printing (Seamless Tubes)

Seamless tubes are printed after they are already shaped into round cylinders.

Advantage : Because there is no seam, your artwork can wrap all the way around the tube continuously for a very clean, premium look.
Disadvantage : Printing on a curved surface is much harder. The images cannot be as detailed, and crisp, complex color gradients are difficult to achieve.

4. Squeezing Experience: How They Feel to Use

The way a tube behaves when a customer squeezes it affects how they feel about your brand.

The ABL Crinkle Feel: Aluminum does not spring back. When you squeeze an ABL tube, it stays squished and flat. This is great because it prevents outside air from sucking back inside, protecting the remaining cream. However, the tube can look messy, wrinkled, and deformed over time.
The PBL and Seamless “Bounce Back”: These tubes are highly elastic. When you squeeze them to get the product out, they instantly pop back into their original round shape. This keeps the tube looking brand new and full on bathroom counters. The downside is that this “bounce back” act draws outside air back into the tube, which can dry out certain formulas.
